Ashikodi, was replaced after coming on as a second half substitute for the first team on Tuesday night, grabbed both goals in the away win at St. James' Park.
After the game coach Ady Williams was delighted with the attitude of the side, with special praise for the first team squad members involved.
"The more senior pro's were excellent tonight and in fairness it was a good team performance," said Williams post-match.
"After the Swansea game, where we lost, the senior players came in for a lot of criticism but they responded in the right way tonight. Their attitude and application was first class out there.
He added: "Whether it was a younger player going out to make a name for themselves or a senior player getting the game time in - everyone did well and they can be pleased with the night's work," finished Williams.
After taking a 2-0 lead into the break, Swindon held on for a 2-1 win over The Grecians with midfielder Christian Roberts returning to his former club.
