Town secure their passage into Round Two thanks to a Roberts double and an own goal from Lumsdon.
Swindon Town kicked off the Paul Sturrock era heading towards the Stratton Bank following a well-observed two minutes silence.
Town's first corner came after just two minutes with Paul Evans sending a testing ball into the box. Curtis Weston headed the attempted clearance straight back into the box but the ball deceived the visiting defence and rolled straight across the face of goal with Roberts just unable to get on the end of it. There was further pressure inside the first five minutes with an additional two corners won. Curtis Weston then had a 20-yard drive well saved before the Carlisle defence succumbed to what had been excellent early Swindon pressure.

Curtis Weston picked up the ball and powered through the middle past the half way line before feeding Roberts, who knocked the ball back to Paul Evans who sprayed the ball wide to Brown in acres of space on the left. Brown hit his cross with pace into the near post with Chris Lumsdon heading the ball past his own keeper form six yards to hand Town the early lead on 9 minutes.
After taking the advantage Swindon continued to pressurise Carlisle with some dominant midfield play whilst frustrating the Cumbrians frontline with some organised defence. Derek Holmes had a half chance at the far post following a corner but was unable to keep his 19th minute effort down.
Royce Brownlie had an opportunity to carve out a Town second with 22 minutes on the clock. After a Roberts burst through the centre Brownlie slid away from his marker on the right of the area before turning into the box. He took the ball on but smashed his shot high and wide with Brown and Roberts waiting inside the six yard box.

Aaron Brown was next to provide the forward momentum with his deep cross narrowly outrunning Roberts on the by-line. Curtis Weston then sparked another Town attack on 28 minutes. After a Carlisle cross from Kevin Gall had drifted onto the Town crossbar, Weston tricked his way out of the home area before heading up field with pace. He slid an excellent ball through to Brownlie who could only hit the ball at Westwood from 10 yards with Roberts calling for the square ball. Roberts himself then blasted over ten minutes before the break having been set free by Evans.
Sofiene Zaaboub was handed an early introduction to The County Ground as he came on to replace Aaron Brown just before the break. Brown had been forced off injured with Zaaboub taking his place on the left hand side of midfield.
The visitors equalised on 44 minutes. A corner from the left was headed in by skipper Chris Lumsdon with a looping header, which just evaded Paul Evans on the post and landed in the net.

The visitors replaced David Raven with Danny Livesy at the break with Swindon opening the new half looking to end the First Round encounter at the first time of asking.
Carlisle started the second half much livlier than they did the first with Kevin Gall seeing plenty of early ball on the left hand side.
Sofiene Zaaboub was cautioned on 58 minutes for a lunge on Kevin Harper earning the Frenchman a debut booking.
Derek Holmes broke free inside the Town box just after the hour. He appeared to have pushed Jack Smith off the ball before bending a left foot effort just wide of Smith's left hand post.
Ricky Shakes went close with a header after a goalmouth melee on 64 minutes before Chris Lumsdon shot straight at Phil Smith from 20 yards at the other end.
Paul Evans was became the second Town player to enter the referee's notebook on 69 minutes, sixty seconds before Swindon regained their lead.
A ball through from Royce Brownlie was misjudged by Kevin Gray who slipped 35 yards out. Christian Roberts took the ball on round to the right before firing a low shot across Westwood into the far corner from 16 yards to make it 2-1.
Swindon thrived on the advantage and once again continued to press their visitors, this time hoping to seal the game with a third goal. Chris Lumsdon was booked on 76 minutes after fouling Andy Nicholas 35 yards out.
Zigor Aranalde was cautioned on 80 minutes for crashing into Roberts on the touchline, having been lured into the tackle. Stephen Hindmarch was then introduced in place of Derek Holmes up front for the visitors.
Former Town loanee Paul Thirwell was then became the latest in the referee's additions to his notebook after bringing down Shakes. The Town midfielder then saw his downward header land just wide with Swindon still searching for the all important third.
Lukas Jutkiewicz replaced Royce Brownlie up front as Town entered the three minutes of added time.

The first contribution from Jutkiewicz was to play an incisive pass through to Roberts who stepped inside his marker inside the box before smashing the ball into the net to seal Town's safe passage into Round Two of the E.On sponsored FA Cup.
